Methley Royals put two successive defeats behind them with a compelling 40-22 win at Sherburn Royals in the CMS Yorkshire League's Unison Division Two.
Stand-off Tommy Skerrett (with scrum-half Dave Craven an absentee in the setbacks at Wakefield City and Brotherton) celebrated his return to action, and the birth of daughter Ruby May, with 16 points to pass the century mark for the season and take his total for the current campaign to 114 points.

Skerrett, who scored a try and six goals, had to concede in the touchdown stakes to prop Gareth Grant-Mills who, having never previously crossed for the Royals, bagged a brace in the victory.

In a highly-disciplined display in which instances of dissent – costly in recent weeks – were cut out, Methley also posted tries by second row James Baxter, hooker Reece Willshaw, centre Thomas Wheatley and winger Thomas Kaye, who has now claimed 14 for the season and is within sight of Matty Handforth's club record of 16.

Matty Carriss-Wright, Carl Garman and Chris Gibson were supportive substitutes in a re-jigged line-up which incl uded Simon Dickinson at fullback and Sam Payne and Danny Snowden on the left flank.

Utility man John Saville showed his versatility at scrum-half, and there were committed displays up front by Dean Tucker, John Laidler, Richard Scott and Danny Bolton.

The victory ensures that Methley will be taking part in the Top-Four play-offs and although the title itself is no longer a possibility following the recent lapses, the Royals are targeting runners-up spot, which will also secure a home fixture in the end-of-season bonanza.

Now in third place, Methley will achieve that if they can account for Wakefield City in this week's home fixture – and current second-placed side Middleton, also at home, seven days later.

The match against Wakefield will be played at Willowbridge on Saturday, April 11, with a 2.30pm kick-off.
